HDPE Ground Protection Mats

Reusable high-density polyethylene mats that spread heavy wheel and track loads across soft ground, so machinery keeps moving without rutting, sinking or damaging the surface underneath.

A ground protection mat is a temporary working platform laid over mud, sand, grass, gravel, snow or finished paving. Instead of letting a wheel or crawler track press into one small contact patch, the mat distributes that force over its full footprint. The result is a stable, level route for vehicles and a protected surface that can be handed back without costly reinstatement.

ANVI HUANYU manufactures and exports HDPE ground protection mats from Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China. Our mats are used on construction sites, temporary access roads, event grounds, oil and gas pads, mines, farms and rental fleets. This page covers the material, the standard specification and how to select a thickness; the specification page holds the full data sheet and the comparison PDF.

Why HDPE instead of plywood or steel

Plywood absorbs water, delaminates and splits under point loads, so it is typically written off after one project. Steel plates need a crane or forklift to position, rust in wet conditions, conduct electricity and can damage asphalt or turf. Solid HDPE sits between them: light enough for two people to handle, stiff enough to bridge soft spots, and chemically inert.

The material is non-absorbent, so mud and water rinse off with a hose. It does not rot, warp or corrode, is UV stabilised for long outdoor exposure, and stays serviceable down to -40 deg C. Because it is non-conductive it is also the safer choice around temporary power and utility works.

  • Reusable across projects for 10+ years, which changes the cost comparison from price-per-unit to price-per-use
  • Two-person handling with four integrated hand holes – no lifting plant required for standard sizes
  • Dual-surface tread: a vehicle traction pattern on one face and a pedestrian-friendly pattern on the other
  • Non-conductive, rust-proof and resistant to oils, fuels and most site chemicals
  • 100% recyclable at end of life

Standard mat specifications

The figures below are the standard production range. Load ratings are reference values on firm ground; actual capacity depends on the ground bearing capacity, the contact area of the equipment and how the mats are joined.

How a mat actually carries the load

A mat does not make weak ground stronger; it reduces the pressure applied to it. A loaded wheel concentrates force into a small contact patch. A stiff HDPE panel spreads that force across up to 2.98 sqm for a 4 x 8 ft mat, lowering the ground bearing pressure below the failure threshold of mud or wet turf.

This is why the same mat can behave differently on two sites. On firm, dry subgrade a 15 mm panel may be sufficient; on saturated clay the same panel needs a thicker section or a geotextile separation layer. Always tell us the ground condition, not just the machine weight, when you request a quote.

Selecting a thickness

Indicative thickness selection by application
Typical useSuggested thicknessWhy
Pedestrian routes, event walkways, lawn protection12.7 mmLightest to carry and fastest to lay; ample for foot traffic and small utility vehicles
Vans, pickups, skid steers, general site access15 mmBalances stiffness and handling weight for mixed vehicle traffic
Excavators, cranes, drill rigs, loaded dump trucks20 mmHighest bending stiffness for heavy point loads and soft subgrade

Load ratings are reference figures, not certified design values. For crane outriggers, lifting plans or public-event structures, obtain a site-specific engineering assessment and ask us for third-party test data before specifying.

Ordering from ANVI HUANYU

We supply factory-direct, with a monthly production capacity of 10,000+ sqm. Standard sizes and black mats ship fastest; custom dimensions, thicknesses and colours are made to order and may carry a minimum order quantity.

To quote accurately we need: the equipment type and gross weight, the ground condition, the area or route length to cover, the project duration, the destination port, and whether you need connectors. Send that to albert@hdpegroundmat.com or WhatsApp +86 13465802719 and we will return a specification, loading plan, MOQ and lead time.

  • Samples available for evaluation before a bulk order
  • Third-party test data and material certificates available on request
  • Stackable for transport; packing list and container loading plan supplied

Frequently Asked Questions

How much weight can an HDPE ground protection mat hold?

Our standard reference ratings are 80 tonnes for 12.7 mm, 100 tonnes for 15 mm and 120 tonnes for 20 mm. These are reference figures on firm ground. Real capacity depends on ground bearing capacity, the equipment's contact area and whether mats are connected, so confirm your site conditions with us before specifying.

Can the mats be used on grass, turf or finished concrete?

Yes. Protecting lawns, sports turf and new concrete from tyre marks and rutting is one of the main uses. Lay the mats before the ground becomes saturated where possible, and use the pedestrian tread face upward for foot traffic.

How long do HDPE ground protection mats last?

With normal use, cleaning and correct storage they are intended for 10+ years of repeated deployment. They do not rot, absorb water or delaminate. Damage is usually caused by driving over unsupported edges or by using a thickness that is too light for the load.

Do you offer sizes other than 4 x 8 ft?

Yes. Six standard sizes are kept in the range, and we support tailored dimensions and thicknesses. Non-standard colours are subject to a minimum order quantity.
