4×8 Ground Protection Mats
The 4 x 8 ft panel is the most widely specified ground mat size in North America. One 1220 x 2440 mm mat covers 2.98 sqm (32 sq ft) and is the baseline for access roads, staging pads and crane working areas.
Size matters more than most buyers expect. A 4 x 8 ft mat is large enough to spread a wheel load over a useful area but still small enough for two people to lift and position by hand. It is also the dimension most rental fleets, event contractors and site engineers already plan around, which makes it the default for temporary access and working platforms.
This page explains coverage maths, layout patterns and how to estimate the number of mats you need. If you are comparing sizes or need a non-standard panel, see our custom size page.
Coverage and quantity calculation
One 1220 x 2440 mm mat covers 2.98 sqm. To cover a rectangular area, divide the area by 2.98 and add an allowance for overlaps, joints and waste. For a linear access road, divide the route length by 2.44 m when mats are laid end-to-end, then multiply by the number of lanes.
| Area to cover | Approx. mats (butt jointed) | With 10% allowance |
|---|---|---|
| 30 sqm (e.g. small staging pad) | 10 | 11 |
| 100 sqm (e.g. event walkway zone) | 34 | 38 |
| 300 sqm (e.g. crane working platform) | 101 | 112 |
| 100 m x 2.44 m single-lane road | 41 | 46 |
These figures are a planning starting point, not a bill of materials. Staggered joints, turns, connection overlap and soft-ground bridging all increase the count. Ask us for a layout drawing and container loading plan for your project.
Choosing how to lay the panels
For a single-lane access road, lay mats end-to-end with the long dimension in the direction of travel and stagger alternate rows so joints never line up. For a wide working platform, run panels in a brick pattern and connect the seams. On very soft ground, a geotextile separation layer below the mats reduces pumping and makes recovery cleaner.
- Keep unsupported edges out of wheel paths – edge loading is the most common cause of cracked panels
- Connect adjacent mats where vehicles brake, turn or reverse, to stop panels drifting apart
- Use the diamond cleat face upward for vehicle traction and the flatter face for pedestrian zones
- Allow a small expansion gap; HDPE moves with temperature more than steel does
Transport, handling and storage
The 4 x 8 ft format stacks flat on pallets, which keeps container utilisation predictable and makes site storage simple. Four integrated hand holes allow two-person lifting without a crane. Mats should be stored level, out of prolonged direct sunlight when not in use, and cleaned of mud before stacking so grit does not abrade the tread.
Weight per mat scales with thickness. We issue a packing list with net and gross weight, pieces per pallet and the container loading plan for 20GP and 40HQ shipments – request it with your quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many 4×8 mats do I need for a 100 metre access road?
A single-lane 2.44 m wide road laid end-to-end needs about 41 mats for 100 m, or roughly 46 with a 10% allowance for joints and spares. A two-lane road doubles that. Send us the route length, width and turning points and we will draw the layout.
Can two people really lift a 4×8 HDPE mat?
Yes for standard thicknesses – the four hand holes are designed for two-person handling. Heavier 20 mm panels are easier with a second pair of hands or a small machine on large projects. No crane is needed for typical placement.
Do 4×8 mats come with connectors?
Every mat has 8 connection holes, and optional locking hardware is available separately. Tell us how many seams your layout has and we will include the right quantity of connectors in the quote.
Is 4×8 ft the same as 1220 x 2440 mm?
They are the industry-interchangeable nominal sizes: 4 x 8 ft equals approximately 1219 x 2438 mm, and the production size is 1220 x 2440 mm. Both descriptions refer to the same standard panel.
