Interlocking Ground Protection Mats
Individual mats become a continuous working platform when they are linked. Our panels carry eight connection holes and optional bolt-on locking hardware so seams stay closed under braking, turning and repeated traffic.
Loose mats work on a firm, level pad. On a real job site – with braking, reversing, turning and soft ground – unconnected panels creep apart, edges lift and mud pumps up through the gaps. Connecting the panels turns a collection of boards into a single surface that behaves predictably.
ANVI HUANYU uses a through-hole and bolted connector approach rather than a moulded tongue-and-groove edge. That keeps the panel simple to mould, lets you join mats in any orientation, and means a damaged connector can be replaced without scrapping the mat.
Connection options
The hardware screws into the flexible plate, allowing the mats to remain connected while vehicles or skid steers drive over them. Four by eight foot mats can be arranged in many configurations to suit the shape of the site.
| Method | Best for | Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Butt jointed (no connector) | Short-duration static pads on firm ground | Lowest cost; panels can drift under traffic |
| Bolt-on locking hardware | Vehicle routes, event floors, long-duration platforms | Recommended for most projects; small extra install time |
| Overlapped / staggered layout | Access roads and wide working platforms | Distributes joints; use with connectors on soft ground |
| Custom hole pattern | OEM and rental fleet systems | Available on made-to-order production |
Laying a connected platform
- Prepare the baseRemove sharp debris and fill deep ruts. On saturated clay or peat, roll out a geotextile separation layer first.
- Set the first rowLay panels with the long axis in the direction of travel, tread face appropriate to the traffic.
- Stagger the second rowOffset joints by half a panel so no four corners meet and no continuous seam runs across the wheel path.
- Align connector holesPosition panels so the eight-hole pattern lines up at each seam; do not force a misaligned panel.
- Fit the hardwareInsert and tighten the locking bolts from above, then check that no bolt head protrudes into a pedestrian route.
- Inspect during useRe-check seams after the first day of trafficking and after heavy rain; re-tighten as needed.
Ordering the right quantity of hardware
Count the seams, not just the mats. A simple two-lane road with staggered rows typically needs connectors at every longitudinal and transverse joint, plus spares. As a rule of thumb, order 5-10% extra bolts and keep a spare set on site; connectors are small, easy to lose and cheap relative to a delayed job.
Tell us your layout dimensions and we will include the connector count in the quotation and packing list. Replacement hardware can be ordered separately at any time.
Do not drive over an unsupported panel edge. Even a fully connected platform can crack if a wheel lands on a corner with no ground contact beneath it. Extend the mat field beyond the wheel path or add an edging row.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the mats truly interlocking, or do they use separate connectors?
They use eight moulded connection holes and bolt-on locking hardware rather than a tongue-and-groove profile. This allows any orientation, works with all panel sizes, and lets you replace a connector without replacing the mat.
Do I need connectors for a pedestrian event walkway?
Yes, we recommend them. Crowd traffic and repeated footfall gradually shift unconnected panels, creating trip hazards and gaps that let mud through.
Can I buy replacement connectors on their own?
Yes. Locking hardware and bolts are supplied as spare parts. Include the quantity with your original order or reorder separately with your mat size and thickness.
Will connectors damage the mats?
No – the holes are moulded into the panel for this purpose. Use the correct bolt length for your thickness and avoid over-tightening, which can deform the plate around the hole.
