Ground Protection Mat Cost & ROI

A reusable mat is a capital asset, not a consumable. Compare price per deployment – including handling, freight and downtime avoided – instead of price per panel.

Procurement often compares a plywood sheet, a steel plate and an HDPE mat on purchase price alone. That comparison systematically favours the disposable option, because it leaves out everything that happens after the first day: collection, disposal, replacement, crane bookings, towing, ground reinstatement and programme delay.

This page gives a framework you can populate with your own rates. We deliberately avoid invented prices – send us your project scope and we will supply the actual unit price, freight and container loading plan.

The cost-per-use formula

For each option, calculate: (purchase cost + inbound freight + connectors + expected replacements) / realistic number of deployments, then add (handling labour + plant time + cleaning + storage) per deployment, and finally add any reinstatement or disposal cost. Divide by the area protected to get a cost per square metre per use.

Costs that are usually invisible in the quote

These are the line items that usually justify a reusable system. When you build the model, use your real day rates – even a conservative estimate changes the ranking quickly.

  • A cancelled crane day because the working pad is too soft
  • Towing and recovery when a delivery vehicle sinks in mud
  • Turf, lawn or paving reinstatement at handover
  • Labour collecting, sorting and disposing of failed sheets
  • Crane or forklift hire for every plate reposition
  • Programme delay while an access route is rebuilt after rain

A rental fleet view

For a hire business the model flips to revenue: (hire rate x utilisation x service life) minus purchase, freight, cleaning labour, hardware spares and write-offs. The variables you control are utilisation, damage rate and turnaround time. Standardising one primary size, stocking spare connectors and specifying a colour or marking for identification all improve those numbers.

See the rental fleet page for a specification that supports this model, and the buying guide for supplier qualification questions.

Ask any supplier for net/gross weight, pieces per pallet and a 20GP / 40HQ loading plan. Freight per square metre is a real cost and it varies significantly between light stackable panels and heavy plates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I justify a reusable mat to procurement?

Present cost per deployment including handling, disposal, reinstatement and downtime, not purchase price. Add a conservative estimate for avoided delay – it is often the largest single saving.

How many uses before an HDPE mat pays back?

It depends on your local plywood spend, labour rates and freight. Build the formula with your own numbers; for contractors moving between sites continuously the crossover is typically early in the first season.

What should be in a supplier quotation?

Unit price, thickness and size, connector quantity, net/gross weight, pallet count, container loading plan, MOQ, lead time, sample availability, test data and the spare parts policy.

Do you publish list prices?

Pricing depends on size, thickness, colour, quantity and destination port. Send the equipment, ground condition, area and port to albert@hdpegroundmat.com and we will return a full quotation.
