Light Duty & Pedestrian Ground Protection Mats
Thinner, easier-to-handle HDPE panels for foot traffic, small vehicles, turf protection and short-duration works where fast deployment matters more than maximum load rating.
Not every project needs a 20 mm panel. Event walkways, garden access, cemetery and park works, telecom repairs and temporary pedestrian routes all need surface protection and traction, but they rarely see a 30 tonne excavator. A light duty mat solves those jobs at a lower cost per square metre and with much less handling effort.
Our 12.7 mm HDPE panel is still a solid, UV-stabilised, reusable industrial product – not a disposable plastic sheet. It shares the same material, tread options and connection-hole pattern as the heavy duty range.
Typical light duty applications
Because the pedestrian face has a less aggressive texture, the same panel works for both a delivery vehicle in the morning and public foot traffic in the afternoon – simply lay the appropriate face upward.
- Event and festival walkways, catering zones, queueing areas and temporary car parks on grass
- Lawn and turf protection during landscaping, tree care and property maintenance
- Utility, telecom and municipal crews working from vans or small plant
- Indoor or finished-floor protection where tyre marks must be avoided
- Short-duration survey and inspection access over soft ground
When to step up to a thicker mat
| Site condition | 12.7 mm suitable? | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Pedestrians, grass in dry weather | Yes | 12.7 mm, pedestrian face up |
| Vans, pickups, small trailers on firm ground | Usually | 12.7 mm or 15 mm; connect seams |
| Wet or saturated clay, repeated vehicle traffic | No | 15 mm or 20 mm plus separation layer |
| Excavators, cranes, loaded trucks | No | 20 mm heavy duty mat |
| Unsupported spans or deep ruts | No | Regrade or bridge with engineered support |
A light duty mat will flex on soft subgrade. That flexibility is fine for foot traffic but can cause edge lift under vehicles. If the ground is wet, choose the thicker panel – the extra cost is small compared with a damaged mat or a stuck vehicle.
Handling, cleaning and reuse
A 12.7 mm panel can be carried by two people using the hand holes, laid without plant, and stacked flat after use. The non-absorbent HDPE surface rinses clean with water, which matters for event contractors who move from a muddy field to a clean venue in the same week.
The panel is UV stabilised and rated to -40 deg C, so it can stay outdoors for the duration of a season without becoming brittle. With normal care it is designed for 10+ years of redeployment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are light duty mats strong enough for vehicles?
For vans, pickups, small plant and light trailers on firm ground, yes. The 12.7 mm panel has an 80 tonne reference rating on firm ground, but bending stiffness – not ultimate load – is the limit on soft ground, so step up to 15 mm or 20 mm for wet sites or heavy machinery.
Which side should face up for an event?
Use the flatter, pedestrian-friendly tread upward for public walkways and the diamond cleat upward where vehicles need traction. Both faces are textured, so neither is slippery when clean.
Can light duty mats be joined together?
Yes. They use the same 8 connection holes and optional locking hardware as the rest of the range, which stops walkway panels shifting under crowd traffic.
Do you supply smaller sizes for narrow garden paths?
Yes. Standard sizes go down to 610 x 1220 mm (2 x 4 ft), which suits narrow paths and gateways. Custom dimensions are also available.
