Heavy Duty Ground Protection Mats
Thick-section HDPE panels engineered for the point loads of tracked excavators, mobile cranes, drilling rigs and loaded haul trucks on soft or saturated ground.
Heavy duty does not simply mean 'thicker'. A panel has to resist bending between soft spots, survive the point load of an outrigger or crawler shoe, and stay flat enough that vehicles do not rock. Our 20 mm HDPE mat is the top of the standard range, with a 120 tonne load reference on firm ground.
These mats are used for crane pads, temporary haul roads, drilling and pipeline right-of-ways, quarry access and wind farm construction. They replace steel plates on jobs where lifting plant is unavailable, corrosion is a problem or electrical isolation matters.
Where heavy duty mats are specified
In each case the failure mode is the same: the machine sinks, the surface ruts, and the job stops while a tow or a repair is arranged. A stiff continuous platform removes that downtime.
- Crane and mobile elevating platform working pads, including outrigger distribution zones
- Excavator and dozer access across mud, snow, sand and marshy ground
- Temporary haul roads for loaded dump trucks and concrete mixers
- Drilling rig and pipeline spreads where equipment is stationary for long periods
- Quarry and mine benches with abrasive, uneven surfaces
Thickness and equipment reference
| Equipment | Typical condition | Starting specification |
|---|---|---|
| Skid steer, small excavator (< 8 t) | Firm to moderately soft | 12.7 mm or 15 mm |
| 20-30 t excavator, loaded lorry | Soft or wet subgrade | 15 mm, connected |
| Mobile crane, large excavator, drill rig | Saturated ground / point loads | 20 mm, connected, on geotextile |
| Heavy haul, multi-axle transport | Long-duration access road | 20 mm with engineered layout |
This table is a selection aid, not a structural design. Crane lifts, outriggers and public-safety applications require a site-specific engineering calculation using actual ground bearing capacity. We can supply material test data to support your engineer's review.
Why HDPE wins on heavy sites
A steel plate of equivalent stiffness needs lifting equipment for every move and will rust, rattle and conduct electricity. An HDPE panel can be repositioned by a small crew, will not corrode in wet or chemical environments, and is quiet under traffic. It also flexes slightly rather than permanently deforming, so it returns to shape after a load passes.
| Factor | HDPE mat | Steel plate |
|---|---|---|
| Placement | 2 workers or small machine | Crane / forklift required |
| Corrosion | None, chemically inert | Rusts in wet conditions |
| Electrical | Non-conductive | Conductive |
| Effect on pavement | Gentle, flexible | Can mark or crack finished surfaces |
| Noise | Quiet under load | Rattles and bangs |
| Lifecycle | Reusable 10+ years, recyclable | Energy-intensive to produce and move |
Specifying correctly
When you request a quote, give us the gross vehicle weight, axle or track configuration, whether outriggers will be used, the ground description (dry, wet, clay, sand, peat), the working area and the project duration. We will recommend thickness, size, connector count and, where needed, a separation layer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a 20 mm HDPE mat really replace a steel plate under a crane?
On many sites yes, because the mat spreads the load rather than relying on its own mass. However crane outriggers create high point loads. Send the outrigger reaction forces and ground bearing capacity to your engineer and to us; we will supply test data for the assessment.
What is the maximum load for your heavy duty mat?
The 20 mm panel carries a 120 tonne reference rating on firm ground. The limiting factor on weak ground is usually the subgrade, not the mat, so the number should not be used as a design load without a ground assessment.
Do heavy duty mats need to be connected?
For static plant on a firm pad, butt-jointed mats may be adequate. For moving traffic, braking, turning or soft ground, use the 8 connection holes and locking hardware so panels cannot separate or lift at the seams.
How do they perform in freezing conditions?
The HDPE formulation is rated to -40 deg C and does not absorb water, so there is no freeze-thaw delamination. The cleat tread retains traction on snow and ice better than a flat steel plate.
